I'm an American (of Polish and Sudanese origin) who's lived the majority of his life in the States. I moved to Lyon a short while ago, and don't know any French yet. I thought I'd just absorb it from being around French people, like a sponge, but apparently it doesn't work that way. So when I get the chance, I'll definitely take some French classes.
