In Japan, wesend "nengajo", which is a New Year's greeting card, to make it reached on January 1st.
It is sent to our friends, teachers, colleague, relatives and those who were kind to me the year.
Some people send more than 100 nengajo, so we're very busy in making it in December.
Nengajo is commonly written the following sentences.
"A Happy New Year.
Thank you for being kind to me last year.
I hope to get along with you this year as well."
People who's relatives passed away within the year are not allowed to send nengajo and say "A Happy New Year."
As my grandfather passed away on last August, I didn't send nengajo this year as well.
In this case,we send "mochu hagaki", which passes along thatwe can't send nengajo next year, instead of nengajo during the end of November to the beginning of December.
January 1st is a public holiday.
Almost all shops and restaurants are closed on that day until about ten years ago.
In recent years, however, many shops like supermarkets are open.
Almost all companies are holiday from January 1st to 3rd.
The other day, I did "mochi tsuki (rice-cake making)" at my husband's grandmother's house.
My husband's relatives have been gathering there at the end of the year and doing mochi tsuki every year.

To do mochi tsuki at home like this is very uncommon in recent years, I suppose.
I hadn't heard of it till I married.
Though I don't like mochi so much, I feel ones made there tasty.
日本では、年賀状と呼ばれる新年の挨拶状を元旦に届く用に送ります。
年賀状は友人や先生、仕事で関係のある人、親戚、その年お世話になった人に送ります。
多い人だと100枚以上送るので、12月は年賀状作成にとても忙しいです。
年賀状には基本的に以下のようなことが書かれています。
「明けましておめでとうございます。
昨年はお世話になりました。
今年もよろしくお願いします。」
その年に親戚が亡くなった人は、年賀状を送ったり、「明けましておめでとう」と言ったりすることができません。
私は8月に祖父を亡くしたので、今年は年賀状を送っていません。
この場合は、年賀状の代わりに「喪中葉書」を11月末から12月上旬の間に送ります。これは翌年の年賀状を送れないことを知らせるものです。
元旦は祝日です。
10年位前まではほとんどのお店やレストランは休みでした。
でも近年ではスーパーマーケットのようなお店は開いていることが多いです。
ほとんどの企業は1/1から1/3は休みとなっています。
先日、主人の祖母の家で餅つきをしました。
毎年主人の親戚が年末に集まり餅つきをしています。

このように家庭で餅つきをするのは近年では非常に珍しいことだと思います。
結婚するまでは今でも餅つきをしている家庭があるということは聞いたことがありませんでした。
私はお餅はそんなに好きではないのですが、ここで作られたお餅はおいしいと思います。
